Hoodia

Before 2004, Hoodia Gordonii was simply an African desert succulent to most of the United States population. Since that time it has attracted growing populatrity for its appetite suppression qualities. There is now increasing use of Hoodia as a means to help lose weight.

Despite its recent appearance in modern science, the San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert in South Africa discovered centuries ago that Hoodia could stave on hunger and thirst on their long hunting treks. Specifically they would ingest a piece of stem that they had cut from the plant. Records of the Bushmen's usage of Hoodia appeared as early as the 1930s but little research was started until the early 1960s.
